DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that the Mt. Diablo Challenge will be held on Sunday\, October 3\, 2021 and is dedicated to 86-year-young cyclist\, Joe Shami (photo right). His love of Mt. Diablo led him to climb it 600 consecutive weeks. It also led to his nickname “The Legend of Mt. Diablo.”  While we may have lost Joe this year when he was hit by a car while on his bike\, he will continue to serve as an inspiration to cyclists for years to come.  \nOctober 3\, 2021 will be the 38th year that Mt. Diablo State Park will close the road for this epic bicycle climbing event to benefit Save Mt. Diablo and the Mt. Diablo Interpretive Center.  The 11.2 mile\, individually-timed ride climbs 3\,249 feet to the summit of Mt. Diablo starting up South Gate Road. Mt. Diablo is one of the highest peaks in the San Francisco Bay Area with views of the Farallon Islands and the Sierras. The road is closed for safety and it is limited to 1000 cyclists.  The ride welcomes all ages\, abilities\, teams and bicycle types.  The first waves ascend without any descending bicycle traffic.  It’s a once a year opportunity to enjoy riding the mountain without cars. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-05)\, who started an initiative to get more people moving\, especially on bikes\, Mare Island PedalFest is focused on gathering all ages and abilities for two-wheeled fun\, food and frivolity. Produced in partnership with the Mare Island Brewing Co and Musto Studios\, event organizer Ride Napa Valley brings forth a unique day of motion and memories as guests can ride as fast or slow as chosen\, enjoy the flavors of beer and nourishment by the Brewing Co\, and listen to the sounds of fans and cyclists during this multi-activity bike affair. The event benefits the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation (Museum)\, as well as the Napa Valley Vine Trail Coalition (a non-profit organization dedicated to building a 47-mile bike and walking path from the Vallejo Ferry to Calistoga). 2019 was the inaugural (year zero) of Mare Island PedalFest\, with a focus on community\, fun\, and an eye towards an even more competitive races in the future. \nAdditional information/registration.

DESCRIPTION:We were all hoping for some glimmer of hope to be able to hold the 38th annual Mount Diablo Challenge this year\, but unfortunately the recent news of increasing infections compels us to postpone this event until 2021.  \nHopefully by then we will be able to have a grand Mount Diablo Challenge and post-ride celebration.   \nOur current plan is to open June 1\, 2021 and the event is scheduled for October 3\, 2021\, the first Sunday in October 2021.  \nIn the meantime\, ride safe and we look forward to seeing you next year!

SUMMARY:Mount Diablo Challenge 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Mount Diablo Challenge is a timed road bike ride to the summit of Mount Diablo. Mt. Diablo State Park will be closed to the public during the event to provide participants with a safe course to ascend and descend the mountain. Recreational riders are encouraged to set a personal best for the climb while competitive riders attempt the ultimate goal of finishing in under one-hour. Since maximum effort should be rewarded\, a collection of great prizes awaits top finishers. Plus\, a selection of other prizes and goodies will be awarded to winners in 16 different age categories. The oldest and youngest riders will also be recognized. \nBack by popular demand you can form or join a team! After you register as an individual Road Bike participant\, you have the option to create a team of at least 4 riders.  Each team can compete against other teams for the best combined time up the mountain. To make a team during your registration\, create a team name under the “Event Questions.” Next\, indicate whether it is an all-male\, an all-female or coed team.  Then\, choose whether your team is in the “Teams/Club” or the “Friends/Family” category. Finally\, tell your friends to look for and join your team when they register. You can have as many team members as you like on your team but only the top 4 finishers’ times will be used to determine the “combined time” for your team up the mountain. Note that the combined time for coed teams will be determined by the time(s) of the first 2 men and the first 2 women on your team to cross the finish line.  You will have the option of starting in the same wave as your team members. If you select this option\, you will be placed in the wave that corresponds to the slowest time registered for all of your team members.  If you do not select this option\, you will be placed in the wave corresponding to your individual estimated time. \nThis year’s entertainment and vendor expo will be held at Monte Vista High School. After the ride participants and their families are invited to enjoy music and food while the winning riders are recognized. Turnaround time at the top of the mountain will be quick so that riders can enjoy the party. Inspired by Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-05)\, who is focused on ensuring more people enjoy cycling as a way to get around\, see the sights and get healthier\, the event will feature three family-friendly components: an urban cyclo-cross race for all levels called “The Wet Mile Urban Cyclo-Cross”; a family-oriented bike tour named\, “Lap of the Shipyard”\, showcasing the historical landmarks of the island; and a youth BMX bike rodeo with Olympian Donny Robinson. “When we heard Congressman Thompson — who has been a huge supporter of the legacy of Mare Island — was an avid cyclist and had this idea for a bike festival\, we were instantly all in\,” stated Kent Fortner\, founder of the Mare Island Brewing Co. “The PedalFest is an experience that really can’t be found elsewhere; our Wet Mile Urban Urban Cyclo-Cross is a three-mile multi-lap race through the island which will have our registered cyclists riding through 142 years of naval shipyard history including through and around shipbuilding gantries\, alleys\, winding trails\, buildings\, twisted staircases\, railroad tracks\, inspiring historic and bay views\, jumps and a few bumps. And all this starts and stops at the Brewery to make sure nobody is going thirsty!” PedalFest races are divided into beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced cyclo-cross categories. A team relay race called the “Lonesome Louis” relay will also be held. According to local historians\, when the Island was shuttered in 1996\, one bike — eventually dubbed “Lonesome 1 Louis” — remained chained to a fence for over a decade. PedalFest organizers will feature the actual over fifty-year-old Lonesome Louis\, on loan from the Museum. The winning team will have their name engraved on the “Lonesome Louis” trophy to be housed at the Mare Island Brewing Co. “We’re excited to test out an event as such which celebrates the artistanship and history of the island\,” stated Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan\, “and I appreciate the event organizers’ efforts creating a family-friendly experience such as the guided bike tour including West Coast’s first dry docks\, the historic core\, the officers mansions\, St. Peter’s Chapel and the haunted armory.” Along with the urban cyclo-cross race and family bike tour\, a BMX kids rodeo will be hosted by local (Napa) Olympian Donny Robinson\, winner of the bronze medal in BMX at the 2008 Beijing Olympics\, as an ongoing\, all-day event that is free to all comers. Festivities start and finish at the Mare Island Brewing Co. beginning at 10 am to 4 pm. All urban cyclo-cross races require advance registration with fees ranging from $20 to $40 dollars. SUMMARY:Mount Diablo Challenge
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Mount Diablo Challenge is a timed road bike ride to the summit of Mount Diablo. Mt. Diablo State Park will be closed to the public during the event to provide participants with a safe course to ascend and descend the mountain. Recreational riders are encouraged to set a personal best for the climb while competitive riders attempt the ultimate goal of finishing in under one-hour. Since maximum effort should be rewarded\, a collection of great prizes awaits top finishers. Plus\, a selection of other prizes and goodies will be awarded to winners in 16 different age categories. The oldest and youngest riders will also be recognized. \nA new “Team Challenge” has been add to this year’s event. Now\, after you register as an individual Road Bike participant you can also create a team\, where you and a minimum of 3 of your friends can compete against other teams for the best combined time up the mountain. You make a team during your registration under the ‘Event Questions’ by creating a team name and indicating whether it is all Male\, Female or Coed team. Then tell your friends to look for and join your Team when they are registering. \n\nOak Hill Park in Danville will host this year’s entertainment and vendor expo. After the ride participants and their families are invited to enjoy music\, beer\, wine and a variety of cuisines available in our food truck area. Turnaround time at the top of the mountain will be quick so that riders can enjoy the party.
